Emily De Waard earned a bachelor’s degree in English Writing from South Dakota State University in 2018 with minors in German, history, and journalism.
She currently serves as an AmeriCorps VISTA in Omaha, Nebraska, at a nonprofit called Partnership 4 Kids. There, Emily is a Web + Print Storyteller and Grant Writer. Her work includes interviewing students served by P4K to share their stories in print/web/social media. She also researches grant opportunities and works on proposals.
Emily worked in communications at Daktronics in Brookings, South Dakota, for 3.5 years before moving on to P4K. In 2018, she was the project manager of Daktronics’ 50th anniversary commemorative book. In less than a year, she planned the layout, wrote a third of the book, and oversaw writing, design, and editing through to publish. At the same time, she also created a museum of Daktronics’ 50 years of history in its global headquarters, which debuted at the 2018 public open house and 50th anniversary celebration.
During her undergrad, Emily was the Editor-in-Chief of SDSU’s independently student-run, award-winning newspaper, The Collegian. She started as a Copy Editor in 2016, then News Editor and Managing Editor. She covered the student government beat, designed newspaper pages, and wrote news and feature stories.
She was also the Editor of SDSU’s Journal of Undergraduate Research for two years in which she edited and published research manuscripts.
